Description:

The cell contains a plethora of length and time scales: At present, the theoretical description and modeling of intracellular phenomena requires considerable intuition. A more systematic approach to describing the most relevant experiments currently undertaken in biology requires bridging the scales and, thereby, being able to map the effect of one scale (such as the interaction of a ligand with an enzyme) to emergent behavior, such as diffusion, self-assembly, and finally cellular morphology. Likewise, large-scale membrane deformations can also affect the local presence of pharmaceutical agents, such as in the case of cell-penetrating peptides. In the past few years, several methods have been developed to achieve a true multi-scale or integral approach to modeling cellular behavior. These methods range from fluctuation-based analysis of molecular dynamics simulations via reaction coordinates to specialized continuum solvers and coupled simulation techniques for membrane-bound organelles, soft interfaces, and protein condensates. The general application of these methods is limited by their availability and difficulty of use.Furthermore, unlocking the full potential of these methods requires their combination.

This workshop is intended as an exchange of methods across different research groups, focused on German-Czech collaboration. Invited speakers will not only share the description of their methods but also their implementation as well as a full hands-on tutorial enabling their use.

Participants in the workshop will therefore not only get an overview but also the necessary tools and skills to perform state-of-the-art simulations of (sub)cellular phenomena. Moreover, participation is free of charge and includes lunch. The places are limited
